DAY 01

Perolniyoc and Ñaupa Church – One-Day Inca Trail

8:00 a.m. Pickup from the hotel. Today we will take a two-hour hike to reach the Perolniyoc archaeological site, a complex built by the ethnic groups that inhabited the Sacred Valley before the Incas. However, during the reign of Inca Pachacútec, the Incas adapted their typical architectural structures to the site.
We will also visit the Perolniyoc Waterfall, which has a drop of over 70 meters, and then explore the Raqay Pata Archaeological Complex.
To conclude our tour, we will visit the Church of Ñaupa, a very special huaca. This has been a place of worship for ancestors, a space for connection, as well as a site for astronomical events and rituals at specific times of the agricultural calendar.

1. How physically demanding is the hike to Perolniyoc?

The hike is moderately difficult. The main route consists of a continuous two-hour ascent along uneven mountain trails until you reach the archaeological site and the waterfall. It is an ideal route for travelers in average physical condition who enjoy active hiking. With a private guide, the pace of the hike will be fully adapted to your needs to ensure your comfort.

2. Is prior acclimatization necessary for this day tour?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Although the Sacred Valley is at a slightly lower altitude than the city of Cusco, the Raqay Pata complex and the Perolniyoc Waterfall are located at over 3,400 meters above sea level. We suggest taking this tour after spending at least one or two days in Cusco or in the Sacred Valley itself so that your body has acclimatized and you can enjoy the ascent without any issues.

3. Can we swim in the Perolniyoc Waterfall?

The Perolniyoc Waterfall is an impressive cascade over 70 meters high, perfect for contemplation, photography, and recharging your energy. However, we do not recommend entering the water to swim, as it comes directly from the melting snow of the high Andean mountains and is extremely cold. The area at the base is the perfect place to rest and enjoy the scenery.

4. What does the “Box Lunch” include, and can it be adapted to dietary restrictions?

Our high-quality box lunch is carefully designed to provide you with the necessary nutrition and energy during your day of hiking, using fresh, select ingredients. As this is an experience managed by Suntrace Peru, we have complete flexibility to adapt your meals to any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy management). 5. Will there be restrooms along this route?

As this is one of the less conventional routes, far from mass tourism, the immersion in nature is complete, but infrastructure is very limited. There are no modern public restrooms along the mountain trail or at the archaeological sites of Ñaupa Iglesia or Raqay Pata. We suggest using your hotel’s restroom before departure and bringing your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer (always remembering to take all your trash back to the city).

6. What makes a visit to Ñaupa Iglesia so special and enigmatic?

Ñaupa Iglesia (which translates to “Ancient Temple”) is one of the most mysterious huacas or sanctuaries in the Sacred Valley. It is not a colonial church, but a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center carved with astonishing precision inside a natural cave. It stands out for its finely carved stone altar and an enigmatic blind door. It is considered a site of very strong spiritual and astronomical energy, ideal for those seeking a deep connection with the Andean worldview.
