DAY 01

From the Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest

Your adventure begins in the morning with a flight to Puerto Maldonado, where a representative will meet you and take you to the Tambopata River. After a 48-kilometer journey through the heart of the jungle, you’ll settle into the lodge to enjoy the surroundings. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the local flora on a guided hike, and as night falls, we’ll head back out to discover the secrets and nocturnal wildlife of the Amazon.

DAY 02

A Spectacle of Colors and Sounds

We set out early in the morning, heading toward the world’s largest macaw clay lick. You’ll enjoy a unique sunrise as hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gather on the clay walls. After breakfast, we’ll visit a natural waterfall and hike among giant trees to spot monkeys and peccaries in their natural habitat.

DAY 03

Exploring Lake Sandoval

We’ll head to the Tambopata National Reserve to visit the beautiful Lake Sandoval. After a hike through the forest, we’ll explore this body of water by boat, home to giant otters and exotic birds. You’ll enjoy an unforgettable sunset, and in the evening, we’ll go on a “caiman-spotting” expedition with flashlights before turning in for the night.

DAY 04

Wake up in the jungle and set off.

Early in the morning, we’ll take one last stroll along the lake to capture the reflection of the giant palm trees at sunrise. After breakfast at the lodge, we’ll head back to Puerto Maldonado for your flight or bus trip, bringing this unforgettable adventure to a close.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I pack for this jungle trip?

To make the most of your trip, we recommend bringing lightweight, quick-drying clothing, preferably in light colors (long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect you from mosquitoes). Don’t forget to pack insect repellent (with DEET), sunscreen, a hat, a headlamp (essential for night expeditions), a good pair of hiking shoes, and a rain poncho.

2. Do I need to get vaccinated before traveling to Tambopata?

Although it is not a strictly mandatory requirement to enter the region, it is highly recommended to get the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before your trip. We suggest consulting with your trusted doctor about this vaccine and malaria prophylaxis.

3. The itinerary indicates a “Moderate” difficulty level—what level of physical fitness do I need?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be in average physical condition. The moderate level is due to the fact that we will be taking hikes of a couple of hours on jungle trails that may be uneven or muddy (depending on the rains). Additionally, you should be prepared for the hot and humid climate characteristic of the Amazon, and have the basic agility to board and disembark from the boats.

4. Can I bring all my luggage to the lodge?

Due to space constraints on the boats and for comfort during river transfers, we recommend bringing only a backpack or duffel bag with the bare essentials for the 4 days. Large luggage or heavy suitcases can be safely stored at our offices in Puerto Maldonado before we set sail.

5. Will there be internet or cell phone service during the trip?

Cell phone service and internet connection are very limited or completely unavailable in the Tambopata National Reserve and at the Sotupa Lodge. This trip is designed to be an immersive experience, offering you the perfect opportunity to disconnect from technology and truly connect with nature.

6. Is it guaranteed that we will see macaws and giant otters?

Since these are wild animals living freely in their natural habitat, we cannot guarantee sightings 100%. However, our itinerary is strategically designed to visit the best locations (such as the clay lick and Lake Sandoval) during peak animal activity times, which greatly maximizes the chances of observing these fascinating species.
